Back to the old ways...scary

What is going on in Russia. Reminds me to pray for Stacie as she is laboring over there.

'50% good' rule is bad news for Russian radio

Andrew Kramer, Moscow
April 23, 2007

AT THEIR first meeting with journalists since taking over Russia's largest independent radio news network, the managers had startling news. From now on, at least 50 per cent of reports about Russia must be "positive".

Journalists working for the Russian News Service were told by the new managers, allies of the Kremlin, that opposition leaders could not be mentioned and the US was to be portrayed as an enemy.

How would they know what constituted positive news? "When we talk of death, violence or poverty, for example, this is not positive," said one editor who did not want to be identified for fear of retribution.

In a darkening media landscape, radio news had been a rare bright spot.

Now, the implementation of the "50 per cent positive" rule at the Russian News Service leaves an increasingly small number of news outlets that are not managed by the Kremlin, directly or through the state national gas company, Gazprom, a major owner of media assets.

The three national television networks are already state-controlled, though small-circulation newspapers generally remain independent.

This month alone, a bank loyal to President Vladimir Putin tightened its control of an independent television station, Parliament passed a measure banning "extremism" in politics and prosecutors have gone after individuals who post critical comments on web chat sites.

Parliament is also considering extending state control to internet sites that report news, reflecting the growing importance of web news as the country becomes more affluent and growing numbers of middle-class Russians acquire computers.

On Tuesday, police raided the Educated Media Foundation, a non-governmental group, sponsored by US and European donors, that helps foster independent news media.

The police removed documents and computers that were used as servers for the websites of similar groups. That brought down a website run by the Glasnost Defence Foundation, a media rights group, which published bulletins on violations of press freedoms.

With this new campaign, aimed at tying up the loose ends before a parliamentary election that is being stage-managed by the Kremlin, censorship rules in Russia have reached their most restrictive since the break-up of the Soviet Union.

The tactic has been to impose state ownership on media companies and replace editors with supporters of Mr Putin or those who offer a more upbeat account of developments in Russia.

The new censorship rules are often passed in vaguely worded measures and decrees that are ostensibly intended to protect the public.

Parliament on Wednesday passed a law allowing for prison sentences as long as three years for "vandalism" motivated by politics or ideology.

Again, vandalism is interpreted broadly, human rights groups say, and can include acts of civil disobedience.

State television news, meanwhile, typically offers only bland accounts of official meetings. Last weekend, the state channels mostly ignored the violent dispersal of opposition protests in Moscow and St Petersburg.

The things we do

Just some stuff we have recently been up to.

Last weekend we went to a footy game with Josh M., Daryl and Brit, and Daryl's family. Geelong vs. Carlton, Go Cats!!! (Geelong). We won by a lot....sorry Daryl and Brit :-(
Jolene stayed with Sarah and Eleni; Adele came with us. That was interesting. The game started around 7:00pm, close to Adele's bed time. Every time the siren sounded Adele would jump and cry. Every time Geelong would score or do something spectacular Josh would cheer and Adele would startle and cry. Every time the guy in front would turn around and look at Adele, she would startle and cry. Eventually (an hour later) she was so tired she passed out; the sounds and ugly (apparently) faces didn't matter any more. All in all it was good and Adele really wasn't that difficult to deal with. I guess it was our fault anyway :-)

Friday night Daryl held a surprise dinner party for Brit (turning 26). We all met around 6:30 at an Indian restaurant called Kahn Curry. She was very surprised and we all had a good time. We brought Adele along to this shin dig as well. It was pretty crowded, 22 of us, so we had to put her under the table to sleep. It worked pretty well, dark, muffled white noise, and smelly feet. Probably did the job of knocking her out :-)

Saturday night Sarah, other women from church, and I watched "Becoming Jane" . Pretty good except for the early dudity and party scene. I wonder how much of it is really true though, I guess I should find out huh?

Today, Sunday, Brandon and I helped out with the new Youth Fellowship Group. We did some one-on-one get to know you talking, B and I shared our testimonies, Alastair shared from the Word, and last not but least we ate. We both enjoyed the time, it was good to get to know the kids better.

I wish my car was the Enterprise

Jolene was holding Adele until Brandon started coming up the stairs. She tried to make a run for it and while Adele was still in her lap, hence the look of distress on Adele. Kinda funny actually.

Today, we were planning on driving to the Blackwood's house ( 2 hour and some minutes) for a surprise day party for Maria.

We got to the center of Geelong and red lights stared to come on, the car started making beeping noises and I could hear a boiling noise. I thought that perhaps if I turned around I would see Captain Kirk behind me yelling "Scottie I need more power!". Unfortunately I was not on the Enterprise, we could have cut the time of the trip by 2 hours and some minutes if we were. Instead we were in the Ford Falcon aka "hoon mobile" and it was sick. Apparently the alternator belt decided our car was no longer cool, and jumped ship. This led to the battery light coming on, the water pump no longer pumping and the car over heating, not so great when you are trying to drive over 100km.

So, what to do? We called a few people and finally were able to get a hold of Josh and Sarah. Josh picked us up and took us home. So that is the end of the story really. We didn't go, bummer. It would have been fun and we had a killer present as well.

If you happen to see a loitering belt call us asap.

Triple J radio station boycott

I am feeling a bit lazy so I will just copy and paste the e-mail sent out to our church....here goes

Some of you have already been made aware of the following via an email from Meg Fisher, and the point was raised at tonight's prayer meeting, but for those who don't know, Andrew Stewart has asked that a general email be sent to the whole congregation...
Triple J (a public radio station) is holding a contest this Thursday (April 5th) morning as they broadcast their Breakfast Show live from Federation Square in Melbourne.
As the website program puts it...." you're invited to take part in the spiritual star search Jesus! You've Got Talent..."

Apparently the station's ads are encouraging listeners to come and dress up in Jesus costumes, perform stunts (mock miracles), and it's possible that they are even planning to stage some sort of mock crucifixion.
They are affectionately calling it "Holy Thursday".
This should concern us as believers in at least two ways.Firstly, the public ridicule of our Lord Jesus Christ and who deserves the praise of all creation should cause us to grieve deeply and to call people to repentance in his honour. Secondly, the level of spiritual blindness and ignorance of those in our society which leads to acts of such blasphemy is both scary and sad, especially in light of the consequences of unbelief ("forgive them Father, they know not what they do").
What you can do:
(Links are underlined):
  • Write to the ABC's main complaint centre (to complain!)
  • Write an entry on the MYF, Jay, and the Dr. guestbook (the morning show holding the contest)
  • Boycott the station
  • Pray that the competition would fizzle on Thursday and that no-one would participate.
  • Pray for opportunities for the gospel to be shared with any involved in the competition so that Christ would end up being honoured instead of mocked.

So there you have it, what we are dealing with here in Oz. Not that stuff like this doesn't happen at home though.
