Brandon and G man wrestling. B punches G in the arm or stomach a bit too hard.
G: "Daddy just cute punches."
B: "Like this?" (lightly tapping him)
G: "Yes"
At family worship on the sofa. We are reading about Adam and Eve eating from the tree.
B: "Do you think you guys would have eaten the fruit?"
J & A: "No"
B: "You wouldn't?"
A: "No, because I can't reach. I'm little."
A: "I would need a ladder."
Talking about the wind with Jolene.
J: "The wind is see-through and feel-through."
M: "Yes, it would be hard to grab and put in your pocket."
J: "Mom! The wind is already in my pocket! See, there is air in there."
M: "Yes, that is true. Good point."

Childhood games
Did you and your siblings ever invent strange and wonderful games?
My siblings and I had a few. One was called "Is it broken?" The crux of the game was to determine if the piece of food being held in front of your face by sibling X is either broken in half or not. Yes, it was a game of full of strategy. The hardest items to fool people with were potato chips. If broken in half it was hard to line up the edges neatly enough to look whole. Also, if you applied too much pressure the chip would crumble due to the stress points already being weak. Ha, I sounded like an engineer there :-)
So that was one game we played at mealtimes.
The other one that I remember had something to do with pretending we were ice cubes. This game could only be played when there were small/med sized fluffy clouds over head and wind. Basically you had to run from one shady spot to another without "melting". When a fluffy cloud passed over the sun you would strategically run from one shadow to another. You had to time it right and make sure your run wasn't too long or you might get caught in the sun and melt. We also liked to run down the street in the cloud shadow and then dive behind a parked car when it outpaced us.
I remember playing something similar to the ice cube game in the car as well. It involved pillows and hiding. Always a good combo.
Our kids have taken on the tradition of making up new games. Today the girls were playing "guess what is on this side of the sandwich?" Is it the peanut butter side or the honey side? Ohhhhh the suspense!
Another game they made up is called "hide N' seek wrestle." Like the traditional hide N' seek you have a someone counting and others hiding. However instead of running to base when found, you have to run to the living room rug and wrestle with the counter. You do this with each person you find. After the last person is found everyone goes to the rug for an all out brawl. Once exhausted or hurt*, you start the game over again. Brandon particularly enjoys playing this one with the kids. You have to watch out for G man though. He has learned how to dish out the elbow and if you aren't on alert you receive one in the face or gut.
*it is always someone gets hurt, never tired

Overhearing the kids playing outside...
G: "You be the school teacher (pointing at A), I be the cute boy and you be a griiill (girl) (pointing to J).
I think he is developing a complex.
Talking to the kids about flying back to America.
Me: "Do you want to fly on an airplane?"
G: "Yestthh, a shoot airplane."
Me: (didn't understand what he said) "A what plane?"
G: "A shoot plane, with big guns. So we can shoot."
I am not sure if Qantas or V Australia use those sorts of planes.
Getting ready to go to the pool. I told the girls to put their gumboots on.
Me: (looking at A's feet) "A your boots are on the wrong feet."
A: "Oh, I just knew that but my feet are on right."
I'm glad your feet are on right A. Sadly A vomited right after this and we had to cancel the pool trip.

On the way to swimming lessons....
A: "Mom, it's just hard."
Me: "What is?"
A: "I want to be a grown up on earth but I want to be a kid in heaven."
Me: "Why do you want to be a grown up?"
A: "Because I just want to stay up with you."
Me: "Why do you want to stay up?''
A: "Because I just don't know how late you stay up."
Me: "I see."
Me: "Why do you want to be a kid in heaven?"
A: "Because I just want to play eye spy dere (there)."
Me: "You can play eye spy when you're a grown up too."
A: "It's more fun when you're a kid."
J: "Lets play eye spy now."
A: "OK"
Gideon playing with a marble works set at a friend's house. Trying to build a contraption of some sort.
G: "I need a map!"
G: "Where is the map!"
looking at the instructions
G: "We need to do thhhhis."
G comes up to me with a smile
G: "Mom you're a ponk"
Me: "What?! I'm a ponk?! No you're a ponk!"
G laughing
G: "No! You're a ponk!"
Don't ask me what ponk means. I have no idea. Some sound that he made up and inserts into conversations when he is feeling silly. Anything and everything can be given the title ponk.
Haha spell check certainly didn't like G's word. They are all highlighted yellow. I hate to break it to him that his word is not up to spell checking standards.

Illustrations by J
We encourage the girls every so often to listen intently to the sermon and draw what comes to mind. Last Sunday evening J gave us this drawing. We thank God that we see his work in J's heart even now. We are also thankful that she and A see the daily struggle we have with sin and that it is something they need to bring before the Lord in prayer. A is often more vigilant at it than even myself.
The paper says the following:
"I love you Dad and Mom I love you to(o).
I want to do good things but I can't.
I love Jesus.
Jesus loves me.
Jesus died for us.
An illustration that J made this evening while watching my soccer game. Brandon and the kids don't always come but it is nice when they do.
The colors of each team are correct. My jersey number is 22. The game was at night. J likes using arrows to get her point across. The text above says "by J, who is 6 years old. I am Megan's kid." She wanted to make sure my teammates knew what was going on.

While driving to a friend's house....
J: "Are wishes good?"
Me: "What do you mean by good?"
J: "Some people say 'make a wish.' Is that good?"
M: "Some people say that when blowing out birthday candles. The better thing to do instead of making a wish is pray to God. We can talk to God about anything and ask him for whatever as well."
B: "According to his will. Ask according to His will."
A: (in a very melancholy tone with a long and dejected face attached) "I wish my dreams would come true."
B: "Yeah? What do you dream about?"
A: "I'm not telling."
G: " Can weee westle?"
G: "I whant to westle!"
Me: Coming out of the bedroom dressed for church. Wearing a new dress.
G: "Ohhhhh I wike your dress."
G: "I wuve it. Yes, I do."
Me:(thinking) And your too cute little man.

Reading
This post is a bit overdue.
A read her first words on Friday!
I love the look on their faces when they suddenly realize they have just read their first word. It is very precious. I wish someone could have taken a picture of J and A's faces when this happened. To capture the moment when new doors all of a sudden have opened right before their eyes, would be very cool indeed.
A's words are basic, pat, sat, and bat, but words none the less. Her eyes grew very wide when it dawned upon her what she had just done. Well done 'del! I am very excited for you!
Now on to the hard stuff. Letter pairings and exceptions to the rules.
A is having a bit of a struggle with the letters A, P, B, D, and T. Their sounds get all muddled in her head and come out every which way. I have been working on going over those every day and I think it is clearing things up ever so slowly. Still it can be a bit frustrating when I have just talked to her about the letter P and its sound then show her a card with P on it and she says that it is the letter D or B. Patience, Patience. It will come eventually.

While feeding the guinea pigs
G: "Do binny pigs eat dirt?"
B: "No!"
G:"Do binny pigs eat clothes?"
B:" No!"
G:"Do binny pigs eat 'del (Adele)?"
B:"No!"
Gids likes to watch me cook. While cooking...
Me: adding something to the soup
G:"Whats that?"
M:"It is sort of like salt."
G:"Salt! (throwing his hands into the air) Not again!"
Me: thinking to myself.."and how old are you?"
While at the dinner table...
A points to her wrist, "I can see my brain!"
J: "A, those are your veins, not brains!"

A: "Mom, what does chat mean?"
Me: "It means to have a little a talk together."
A: "I like having little chats. We're having a little chat right now! (giggles)"
J: "Do you know what this picture is about?"
Me: "Ummmm, not sure."
J: "These are all the directions that my eyes can look without turning my head."
*a few months ago J was fascinated with the fact that she could see out of the corner of her eye without turning her head. She was quite enamored with the discovery of peripheral vision and talked about it for some time.
J: "Do you know what this picture is about?"
M: "Raining?"
J: "Its how the rain gets to the clouds and then falls again."
*Apparently B had just finished talking to J about the water cycle: evaporation, condensation, etc. After the discussion she ran inside and drew this picture.
In honor of A we have named our new Mac hard drive "Pink Sparkly Heart". A, may you never forget this monumental moment.
